Hartmann Schedel, collector and copyist of astrological annual predictions

In the late fifteenth century, the humanist physician and bibliophile Hartmann Schedel (1440-1514) assembled a large library of manuscript and printed books. Among them, the two dozen astrological annual prognostications he copied are making up a remarkable set for nowadays historians. As in every collection, the choice Schedel made between prognostications to write down and the ones to leave out is far from random. By studying the main astrological features characterizing those predictions – especially when they're not shared by others produced at the same time – we can formulate hypotheses about his motivations. It seems that his objective may have been to collect newly published prognostications in order to fill a gap in the German area, at the time small producer of such texts. In that, his case would be similar to other bibliophiles in other regions, such as Ferdinand Columbus in Castille. The fact that, unlike the latter, he chose to copy these ephemera, rather than keeping their original incunabula exem-plars, is also of some meaning for the study of cultural practices in the first decades of the print era.
